This John Wimber quote, “Faith is spelled R-I-S-K” has a strong personal meaning for me.
Walking by faith takes us out of our comfort zone. I love my security. I enjoy friends, family, a good job and a nice home. But if I am committed to following Christ, I have to give Jesus the right to disrupt my life with His agenda.
My selfish goal is to enjoy a happy, comfortable life and then die peacefully in my sleep.
Jesus’ goal is to use me to make an eternal difference in people’s lives.
- Even if I’m sometimes uncomfortable.
- Even if my dreams don’t come true.
- Even if I have to abandon all my carefully woven safety nets.
- Even if my life gets messy or complicated.
In other words, Jesus is calling me to love Him, His kingdom and the people He cares about more than my own life.
And I get to choose who to follow—my Savior or myself.
Do I “launch out into unknown seas” when God calls? Or instead, do I lock the door, turn off the lights and pretend I’m not home?
In my lifetime, I’ve done both.
Launching out in faith will always be a risk—but it’s a risk worth taking.
