Divine Tool #3: The Can Opener

What are Divine Tools?

The underside of a can opener with black handles.Divine tools are 100% available to any Christian, at any time.

Regular use of these tools will transform our lives, as we become more like our Master, Jesus. Yet many believers never pick up and use theĀ  divine tools God has given us.

Why?

Simply because each tool is cleverly disguised as a command. Rebellious believers refuse to obey the Lord. They insist on going their own way. So their life remains a mess.

A Cooking Mishap

A skillet full of food being cooked on the stove top.Ever try to open a can of beans or tomatoes without a can opener? The experience is frustrating, labor intensive and messy. In fact, when my can opener broke one day, I turned off the stove, hopped in my car, drove to the grocery store and bought a new one.

Why?

Because I couldn’t get my can of tomatoes open!

The History of the Can Opener

Peter Durand patented the first can in England in 1810, using a wrought iron shell, lined with tin. 10 years later, the Royal Navy began ordering large quantities of his canned food for their crews. Sea water couldn’t contaminate the preserved food inside. It lasted a long time and Unlike glass jars and bottles or pottery, the metal cans wouldn’t break.

Open cans of peaches in a factory, just before they are sealed with a lid.But the sailors and housewives both had to use a hammer and chisel to open Durand’s cans.

By 1858, cans started to be made of a lighter-weight tinplated steel. Tin still lined the inside because it resisted corrosion. American Ezra J. Warner invented and patented the first true can opener in 1858. Many soldiers used it during the U.S. Civil War. This can opener sawed into the can’s lid, creating sharp jagged edges.

As a service, grocery store clerks opened the cans for their customers before they left the store. Clearly this can opener was difficult for people to use. So inventors continued working on the problem.

Finally in 1931 Charles Arthur Bunker patented a can opener with the toothed-wheel crank design we still use today.

What is this Divine Tool?

A huge pile of unlabeled silver cans.So what divine tool functions in our lives as a spiritual “can opener?” Let me ask that question in an easier way.

What can we do to unlock God’s life-altering power?

The answer is prayer, specifically praying in faith.

You’re not going to get the Holy Spirit to open those “Heavenly Cans of Blessing” any other way.
