The Divine Gift We Ignore

Nope, I’m not talking about the Baby.

Close-up of a father and his infant son sleeping, with the words "...for he gives to his beloved sleep" Psalm 127:2.If you’ve ever been around one, you understand that babies won’t let themselves be ignored for long.

They have an interesting, persistent way of making their wants, needs and desires known.

And for some reason, our Creator failed to provide infants with an automatic “off” switch.

My personal opinion is that giving birth and caring for babies is the only thing that stops the human race from becoming completely selfish.

The divine gift we Americans frequently fight, resist and ignore is sleep.  Scientists now think that seven or eight hours of restful sleep per night does more to restore our bodies and keep us healthier than almost anything else.

Here’s the entire verse:

It is in vain that you rise up early
    and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious toil;
    for he gives to his beloved sleep. (Psalm 127:2 ESV)

May we be able to enjoy God’s gift of sleep tonight.
